08/14/2010 - WMBL Champions!

from wmbl.ca

The Swift Current Indians are the 2010 Western Major Baseball League Champions.

Powered by two-RBI nights from Kyle Albright, Aaron Dunsmore and Ryan Dunn, the Indians swept away the Regina Red Sox with a 7-2 win at Currie Field on Saturday night.

For the Indians, it's their first championship since 2006.

"We grade ourselves on championships," said longtime member of the Indians Shawn Lee. "It's nice to win division championships like we have, but it all comes down to winning the championship."

Jason Oatman picked up the win, completing an undefeated (7-0) season. Joey Evans worked 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.

For Regina, the most successful season in franchise history comes to an end. Making their first trip to the WMBL Final, the Red Sox also set a team record in regular season wins (29), and set the single game attendance record with 1,204 fans packed into Currie Field for Game Five of the East Final against Moose Jaw.

"I might be the only person to say this, but we weren't focused totally on winning this year," said Red Sox head coach Rob Cherepuschak. "We wanted to build quality people, and hoped the wins would follow. This season has been great."

The Western Major Baseball League season awards will be announced in the upcoming days, including the Old Dutch Most Valuable Player award.

08/13/2010 - Rained Out Again, Series Now a Best-of-3

The scoreless game was cancelled after just 1/2 of the first inning.

The WMBL Championship Series, which was originally a best-of-5 affair, will now be a best-of-3 due to time limits and the players having to get back to their respective colleges and schools. That means the action will move to Regina tomorrow for game two at 7 PM, and if necessary, the third and final game will be played in Swift Current Sunday at 7 PM.

The Indians lead the series 1-0.

08/12/2010 - GAME TWO POSTPONED

Tonight's second game of the WMBL Championship Series between Swift Current and Regina has been called off due to rain. The Indians lead the best-of-five series 1-0.

A make-up game has been scheduled for tomorrow (Friday) at 6 PM.

08/11/2010 - Indians Pick Apart Red Sox

The Swift Current Indians knocked out 14 hits and got dominating pitching in a 7-1 win over the visiting Regina Red Sox in game one of the Western Major Baseball League championship series.
Indians starting pitcher John Snyder tossed six and two-thirds innings of five-hit ball, allowing one earned run with no walks and six strikeouts.
Joey Evans closed things out, getting the final seven outs without allowing a baserunner.
Aaron Dunsmore had a two run single with two out in the bottom of the third inning, scoring Brady Hohl from third and Taylor Hunter from second base to take a 3-1 lead. Hohl opened the scoring in the first inning when he reached on an infield error and was cashed in by Shawn Lee.
Regina scored their lone run in the second inning when Eric McKinney singled and came around to score on a fielders choice.
The Red Sox threatened in the sixth inning but their rally was thwarted when Dunsmore gunned down Josh Hughes at home plate to end the inning with the 3-1 lead intact.
"They were trying to get something going with two outs and I just had to make a good throw. The guy was barely past third so I just had to make sure that I put it on the money and didn't really have to throw too hard," said Dunsmore, who was playing in an Indians uniform for the first time since July 12. The Spruce Grove native was representing Canada at the World University Baseball Championships in Japan.

"That was just a rocket, just a rocket arm! We missed him when he was gone a lot. He is a big bat in our order and he does that kind of thing so often. He has just got a laser, rocket arm," said Evans.
The momentum carried to the bottom of the sixth when the Indians added two more runs when Taylor Hunter singled in Brent Trask and Brennan Peterson with two out.
"When that kind of play happens there is a big momentum shift," said Evans of Dunsmore's throw. "When you are at home you take those momentum shifts and you run with them. That is what we have done all year. They have a baserunning miscue or an error or something and we take full advantage of it."
The Tribe scored another pair of runs in the eighth for good measure when Kyle Albright's bases loaded bloop single cashed in Peterson and Dunsmore followed with a walk to plate Hunter.
"It is definitely big," said Dunsmore of the game one win. "They have been doing well in the playoffs without me and playing well no matter what. Everyone is just looking for someone to be the hero each day or someone to step up. I am just glad to help us out today."
Game two goes Thursday at 7:05 at MItchell Field.

08/09/2010 - Isotopes Versus Capital City

The WMBL final series is now set thanks to a huge 11-1 victory by the Regina Red Sox in the deciding game five of the East Division finals.

The Red Sox are the best team in the East, and trailed the Indians by one game for the regular season title, and are home to Mitch McDonald who won the triple crown this season.

The series starts Wednesday night here in Swift Current. Game two is also in Swift Current, whereas games three and (if necessary) four will be played in Regina. If its two games a piece at that point, the fifth and final game would be played at Mitchell Field on Sunday.

This is definitely a series you do not want to miss!

08/08/2010 - Indians Take Game 4, Move on to the Final Round

A decisive 12-4 victory over the Okotoks Dawgs has taken the Swift Current Indians into another championship bout.

The Indians jumped on the bats early and never looked back. They scored five runs in the top of the first inning. The 3-4-5 hitters (Lee,Albright,Dunn) went 7-14 and had seven RBIs. Defensively the Indians committed no errors behind the pitching of Brian Strawn, Chad Jones and Joey Evans.

In Moose Jaw the Millers evened up their series with the Regina Red Sox, who will play the fifth and final game Monday night in Regina. After that game, we will know who and when the Indians play next. ... MORE

08/06/2010 - Rain Lets Fans Watch Rider Game Before Coming to Mitchell Field

Head coach Joe Carnahan posted his 100th career WMBL coaching victory, and the Swift Current Indians beat the visiting Okotoks Dawgs 5-2 at Mitchell Field on Friday. The win put Swift Current up 2-0 in the WMBL best-of-five semifinal.

Indians starting pitcher Dan Rogers flung 6 innings of 3-hit baseball to a Dawgs team that achieved a .301 combined batting average through the regular season. Rogers allowed only two runs and amassed seven strikeouts on the night. He got replaced by Chad Jones for the 7th inning and Jones capped it off with two perfect innings while striking out two.

The home team posted a 2-0 lead early in the game, but the Dawgs replied with a 2-run shot by Andrew Robbins in the 6th to tie it. The Indians however added two runs in the 7th and one in the 8th to retake the lead for good. Okotoks limited the damage that could have been, stranding 14 Indians runners on the night.

The game was delayed for an hour due to a prairie rainstorm.

The series moves to Okotoks for game three tomorrow.

08/06/2010 - Okotoks Seeing Red

A four run deficit after two innings got the Indians off to a bad start in the first game of their best of five series against the Dawgs. Swift Current proved it could easily bounce back, and in front of a crazy 430 fans, shut down the Dawgs the rest of the way, and scored nine of their own runs, en route to a 9-5 victory.

Game Two of the series is at Mitchell Field tonight at 7:05. The Indians will then head to Okotoks for game 3 and if necessary game 4. If its knotted up at 2 a piece, the tie breaker game 5 will be back in Swift Current Monday night.

08/01/2010 - Bring on the Dawgs!!!

The perennial rivals of the Swift Current Indians, the Okotoks Dawgs, are the next opponent in the 2010 WMBL Postseason.

The Indians had another impressive outing, this time in Medicine Hat for game three, shutting out the Mavericks 7-0 to sweep the best of five series. They won't get much of a chance to rest though, as the Dawgs also swept their series against the Lethbridge Bulls.

In the east, Moose Jaw has also swept the Melville Millionaires in three games. Only the Weyburn Beavers managed to stave off elimination tonight and will look to even the series Monday night against Regina.

Once that series is done, its on to round two. As soon as the dates are set for those series, we will post them here.

07/31/2010 - Tribe Overcome Rain and Mud

The Swift Current Indians overcame a wet and muddy evening to take a commanding 2-0 lead over the Medicine Hat Mavericks with a 10-0 win in game two of the best-of-five West Division semi-finals.
The Indians got runs from all nine starting hitters as their balanced attack broke out for 10 runs on 10 hits and five walks.

07/30/2010 - Indians Take Game One

Starting pitcher Dan Rogers went 8 1/3 innings for the Swift Current Indians and picked up the win on the mound, as the Tribe won their playoff opener 4-2 to take a 1-0 series lead on the Medicine Hat Mavericks in the best-of-five. Rogers gave up 10 hits, but team defense was strong for the Indians, and only two runs crossed the plate for the Mavs. Joey Evans finished off the game and got the final two outs to end it.

Shawn Lee blasted a solo home run in the eighth inning and tallied two RBIs in this one to lead the Tribe on offense. Kyle Albright hit a RBI double in the second inning to make the score 2-0.

Nathan Gonzalez suffered the loss on the mound for the Mavericks, who committed six errors on the night. Kaitlin Nunweiler came in for relief in the eighth inning, but the Mavs could not overcome the 4-0 deficit.

The Indians will host Medicine Hat tomorrow for game number two of the series, which starts 7:05 PM at Mitchell Field.

07/29/2010 - Indians Get Ready For the Mavericks

Round One of the Western Division Playoffs has the Swift Current Indians facing the Medicine Hat Mavericks, and the Okotoks Dawgs take on the Lethbridge Bulls. Swift Current and Okotoks have home field advantage in their respective series. Game One and Two are Friday and Saturday night at Mitchell Field. Game Three and if necessary Game Four will be played in Medicine Hat. Should the series end up at a Game Five, that will be played back here in Swift Current.

07/27/2010 - BEST IN THE WMBL

The Swift Current Indians have the best record in the WMBL and are granted home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

A three run home run by Brent Trask early in the contest was all the offense the Indians would need to down the visiting Moose Jaw Miller Express 3-0. John Snyder threw an amazing eight innings, striking out 10, and giving up only two hits and two walks.

In Yorkton, the Cardinals managed to hold off the Regina Red Sox, 2-1. The Indians win ends their season at 30-12 and Regina's loss leaves them at 29-13. Regina still has a better record than Okotoks, so that means the first place Indians move to the western division playoffs, and Moose Jaw moves to the east. As of writing, the final playoff spots have not been determined. Stay tuned to this site or www.wmbl.ca for the latest on the playoffs.

07/26/2010 - Okotoks Takes First of Two

In what could end up being a Western Division playoff preview, the Okotoks Dawgs came to Swift Current for two games, and took the first game by a score of 5-2. An two out error early in the game proved costly as the Dawgs hit back to back homeruns account for four of their runs, and the Indians offense just couldn't find the holes in the Dawgs outfield. The second game of the set goes tonight at Mitchell Field, 7:05.

07/24/2010 - Indians Split Lethbridge Set

07/20/2010 - Rolling Towards the Playoffs

The Indians maintain their hot streak, rolling to a 13-3 win over the visiting Edmonton Prospects.  Ryan Dunn had a 3-run homerun, his first of the season and four RBIs. Shawn Lee hit his second homerun as the Indians extend this current run to seven straight victories.

Out of town, the Regina Red Sox won and the Okotoks Dawgs lost, which should mean the best record between the East and West Divisions will go to the East Division, moving Swift Current into the playoffs against the West Division, and a first round matchup against either the Lethbridge Bulls or the Medicine Hat Mavericks.
