Indians Pick Apart Red Sox - 08/11/2010

The Swift Current Indians knocked out 14 hits and got dominating pitching in a 7-1 win over the visiting Regina Red Sox in game one of the Western Major Baseball League championship series.
Indians starting pitcher John Snyder tossed six and two-thirds innings of five-hit ball, allowing one earned run with no walks and six strikeouts.
Joey Evans closed things out, getting the final seven outs without allowing a baserunner.
Aaron Dunsmore had a two run single with two out in the bottom of the third inning, scoring Brady Hohl from third and Taylor Hunter from second base to take a 3-1 lead. Hohl opened the scoring in the first inning when he reached on an infield error and was cashed in by Shawn Lee.
Regina scored their lone run in the second inning when Eric McKinney singled and came around to score on a fielders choice.
The Red Sox threatened in the sixth inning but their rally was thwarted when Dunsmore gunned down Josh Hughes at home plate to end the inning with the 3-1 lead intact.
"They were trying to get something going with two outs and I just had to make a good throw. The guy was barely past third so I just had to make sure that I put it on the money and didn't really have to throw too hard," said Dunsmore, who was playing in an Indians uniform for the first time since July 12. The Spruce Grove native was representing Canada at the World University Baseball Championships in Japan.

"That was just a rocket, just a rocket arm! We missed him when he was gone a lot. He is a big bat in our order and he does that kind of thing so often. He has just got a laser, rocket arm," said Evans.
The momentum carried to the bottom of the sixth when the Indians added two more runs when Taylor Hunter singled in Brent Trask and Brennan Peterson with two out.
"When that kind of play happens there is a big momentum shift," said Evans of Dunsmore's throw. "When you are at home you take those momentum shifts and you run with them. That is what we have done all year. They have a baserunning miscue or an error or something and we take full advantage of it."
The Tribe scored another pair of runs in the eighth for good measure when Kyle Albright's bases loaded bloop single cashed in Peterson and Dunsmore followed with a walk to plate Hunter.
"It is definitely big," said Dunsmore of the game one win. "They have been doing well in the playoffs without me and playing well no matter what. Everyone is just looking for someone to be the hero each day or someone to step up. I am just glad to help us out today."
Game two goes Thursday at 7:05 at MItchell Field.

Okotoks Seeing Red - 08/06/2010

A four run deficit after two innings got the Indians off to a bad start in the first game of their best of five series against the Dawgs. Swift Current proved it could easily bounce back, and in front of a crazy 430 fans, shut down the Dawgs the rest of the way, and scored nine of their own runs, en route to a 9-5 victory.

Game Two of the series is at Mitchell Field tonight at 7:05. The Indians will then head to Okotoks for game 3 and if necessary game 4. If its knotted up at 2 a piece, the tie breaker game 5 will be back in Swift Current Monday night.

Rain Lets Fans Watch Rider Game Before Coming to Mitchell Field - 08/06/2010

Head coach Joe Carnahan posted his 100th career WMBL coaching victory, and the Swift Current Indians beat the visiting Okotoks Dawgs 5-2 at Mitchell Field on Friday. The win put Swift Current up 2-0 in the WMBL best-of-five semifinal.

Indians starting pitcher Dan Rogers flung 6 innings of 3-hit baseball to a Dawgs team that achieved a .301 combined batting average through the regular season. Rogers allowed only two runs and amassed seven strikeouts on the night. He got replaced by Chad Jones for the 7th inning and Jones capped it off with two perfect innings while striking out two.

The home team posted a 2-0 lead early in the game, but the Dawgs replied with a 2-run shot by Andrew Robbins in the 6th to tie it. The Indians however added two runs in the 7th and one in the 8th to retake the lead for good. Okotoks limited the damage that could have been, stranding 14 Indians runners on the night.

The game was delayed for an hour due to a prairie rainstorm.

The series moves to Okotoks for game three tomorrow.
