Nik Gumeson Named WMBL Top Honour
Western Major Baseball League (WMBL) announced today that Swift Current Indian’s first-year infielder Nik Gumeson has been named the leagues Most Valuable Player as voted on by the leagues coaches and managers. In addition to the league’s top honour, Gumeson was also named WMBL Rookie of the Year and a 1st Team All Star infielder.
Gumeson, a 6’1, 190 lbs short stop from Riverston, UT, joined the Indians after sitting out a year with the University of Utah as a transfer student. Despite the year off, he showed no sign of rust as he led the WMBL in Slugging % (675), Triples (5), Home Runs (11), Total Bases (106) and Sacrifice Flies (5). His .312 batting average also was backed up by a team leading 42 Rbi’s and 14 Doubles.
The WMBL also recognized Joe Carnahan (Ashland, WI) as the leagues top Coach. Carnahan led the Tribe to an Eastern Conference leading 27 – 13 record despite a season riddled with injuries and personnel changes. In the two years since taking over for longstanding Indian’s coach Harv Martinez, Joe has put together a record of 60 wins and just 26 losses while appearing in last year’s league final.
The league All Stars were also announce earlier today with Six players being named to the honour. WMBL 1st Team All Stars include infielder Nik Gumeson, outfielder Kyle Albright (Largo, FL), catcher Bo Lybeck (Yakima, WA) and DH Shawn Lee (Gosenell, AR). 2nd Team recognition was handed out to LHP Chris Maloney (Gaithersburg, MD) and local product, infielder Conrad Funk.
